No One Sleeps Hungry: The RRM Janhit Foundation Story

Written by Sahil Kaushik

In 1995, at a time when most women didn’t have the right or courage to step out of their homes, my grandmother, Ram Rati, became the first woman politician from our district. She was kind, compassionate, and fiercely committed to service. Her empathy knew no bounds. Even after her daily duties, she still made time to help those who were in need by cooking them a meal. There were days she would cook for over 50 people by herself and still find joy in caring for each soul who came to her doorstep.

When my grandmother passed away in December 2024, she left behind not just memories — but a powerful thought that became our mission: “No one goes hungry from our doorstep.” My family and I took this message to heart and we carry on her legacy of compassion and service to others.

Why we do what we do

My grandmother’s core belief, “May all beings be happy, and no one sleeps hungry,” gave her the strength to help others throughout her life. She supported the underprivileged in countless ways — from medical aid to education and even assisting in marriages of those who couldn’t afford them.

Inspired by her compassion and principles, we created the RRM Janhit Foundation (Ram Rati Memorial Janhit Foundation). What started as monthly food distributions in small annakshetras (feeding areas) has evolved into a foundation that feeds nearly 3,000 people every day, working in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to eradicate hunger and extend a hand to those in need. We strongly believe:

“If one is born on this Earth, they have the right to nutritious food and proper healthcare. All beings are equal.”

What we aim to achieve

Today, hunger and malnutrition remain some of the most severe issues in rural India. Rural areas often face the brunt of natural disasters, pandemics, and lack of economic opportunity. Children fall ill due to poor nutrition, and thousands sleep on empty stomachs.

Our mission is rooted in our guiding principle: “No one should go hungry from our doorstep.” But our work extends beyond food. We also focus on:

  • Supporting education for underprivileged children
  • Promoting healthcare access
  • Providing equality-driven support systems
  • Uplifting families in need

We strive to offer not just food, but hope, dignity, and opportunity.

Vision vs reality

Led by my grandmother’s principles, our family’s resolve to serve the community turned into action nearly three years ago, amidst the hardships of the COVID-19 era. Distributing aid and food became our immediate priority. We began with bhandaras and langars (community feasts and food distribution drives) that ran continuously for over a month. The overwhelming response encouraged us to dream bigger.

But with growth came challenges — we were entirely self-funded. From finding suitable land, building proper setups, to hiring committed staff — every step tested us. At times, reaching our goal felt nearly impossible. Yet, our determination kept us going.

My grandfather, despite being a kidney transplant patient, along with my father and uncle, worked day and night — from acquiring land to converting it into functional feeding centres. These centres soon became safe spaces where smiles returned to forgotten faces and dignity was restored to the underserved.

What we’ve achieved so far

Today, the RRM Janhit Foundation stands tall as one of the largest family-run initiatives in our region. Some of our key achievements include:

  • Feeding 3,000–3,500 people daily, free of cost
  • Distributing over 1,000 blankets annually
  • Supporting over 50 girls’ weddings from financially challenged families
  • Launching a programme to collect leftover food from events and restaurants for redistribution
  • Partnering with state and national youth-led initiatives supporting causes like anti-drug campaigns, education, and community development

The food we serve is nutritious and prepared under the strict supervision of our own family. Our foundation, rooted in love and humanity, continues to touch thousands of lives.

The road ahead

The visionary behind this foundation — Ram Rati, my beloved grandmother — is no longer with us. But her legacy is alive in every meal we serve, every smile we see, and every life we touch.

Through the RRM Janhit Foundation, we pledge to continue nurturing communities, supporting the vulnerable, and building a future where “no one goes hungry or sad from our own doorstep.” As we look forward, our goal is to expand this initiative globally — so that the message of love, dignity, and compassion reaches every heart and soul, across all borders.

Connect with us

We have come this far as a family-funded foundation but there is still much work to do. We seek to expand our operations in order to serve more families and communities and ultimately, take our advocacy global. If our journey inspires you and you’d like to collaborate or know more, please reach out through our official page or follow our updates. Together, we can build a kinder, hunger-free world.
